Ghetto Hairstyles

Ghetto hairstyles are called such because they are hairstyles that have sprung from the poorer areas of a city. These are hairstyles that have been developed out of sheer creativity and impropriation. Ghetto hairstyles have undergone a lot of transformation in the years and have become more extreme in the styles as time and creativity has gone on.

The original ghetto hairstyles were hairstyles that were brought over by the slaves during the slave trade. These hairstyles included some braiding and some tying, but since most of the slave owners insisted upon cutting the hair and making it more western, Ghetto hairstyles were lost for quite some time. There were some who managed to hang onto their hairstyles from their homelands though and pass them onto their children.

After the slaves were freed, the hairstyles remained very western for the majority of the African Americans until the twentieth century and the acceptance of the hip hop societies. During this time, the Ghetto hairstyles became increasingly more creative and expressive. There are creative braids as well as creative buns that are implemented in ways that were not common outside of the ghetto and hip hop society. Weaves and extensions also became come popular, as had other products that help to hold the hair in place and keep a soft and healthy texture. There is a sense of freeness with the ghetto hairstyles that is often not seen in other hairstyles since these hairstyles embrace true creativity.
